two starts now developing news tonight. >> streets have been cleared and crowds dispersed just after a pro-palestinian demonstration intensified this afternoon. hello again. i'm greg lee and i'm julie julie haener. >> this was the scene as protesters came face to face with police. this video from around 930 this evening, where police in riot gear stood on one side of the barricade and chanting protesters on the other. the police standoff taking place near people's park. it was loud and tense at times, but we did not see any violence. demonstrators were given orders to disperse, but many chose to stay in place. protesters near the corners of people's park started tipping over planters. some throwing trash cans into the street. police forced a shut down the streets surrounding the university for a time. eventually, though, the crowd dispersed. >> now, this all started this afternoon when police in riot gear formed a barricade near

channing hall. pro-palestinian protesters started occupying that building yesterday. it is a vacant building just off of campus owned by uc berkeley. today, law enforcement officers from multiple agencies moved in university says at least 12 arrests were made. the encampment was also cleared late today. you can see the tents and trash removed from the area. we will continue to follow this story out of uc berkeley, but again, at least a dozen arrests tonight. now to southern california, where in-person classes will resume tomorrow at uc irvine. >> this comes after a tense standoff. there between police and pro-palestinian protesters forced the university to move to remote learning. law enforcement declared an unlawful assembly last night after ordering the demonstrators to leave their encampment that had been set up for weeks. the university says officers arrested 47 people, including students, uci employees and people not affiliated with the school, for failing to leave campus. and you can stay up to date on the

campus protests happening nationwide and here in the bay area. just head to ktvu.com or download the fox local app to your smart tv. >> residents of an oakland neighborhood say they are frustrated after multiple break ins were reported. the incidents have occurred in just the last month. new tonight ktvu is. amber lee joins us live from oakland. amber, you spoke with one of those homeowners. >> that's right greg. she was very upset. she tells me she's taken many security measures and that there were witnesses around. but that didn't stop the thieves. surveillance video shows two burglars running out of angela jeffries home in oakland. the one in dark clothing is holding a pillowcase. she says the thief took from her bedroom to carry out the jewelry they stole from her. >> to just bust in my home and take my things like, it's no problem. it's terrifying. it's frustrating. >> they broke in by jumping the fence and breaking her back door. it happened monday afternoon and jeffries home was not the only target. neighbors

tell me this is the third home on reinhardt drive in the redwood heights neighborhood to be burglarized in the past six weeks. they say the thieves strike between noon and 4 p.m. monday through wednesday. really? neighbor matt albert yelled out at the thieves as he witnessed the break in. and the thieves driving away. >> they were certainly not put off by somebody seeing them commit a crime. it seems like this was kind of a normal practice for them, jeffries tells me. >> this gold necklace with a heart with the word mom. a gift from her son, was among the $10,000 worth of jewelry that was stolen from her armoire. she says she was at work when she received a phone alert. >> i feel like there's nothing i can do. all the security i put on and the warning signs, and they don't care. >> neighbors suspect that their close proximity to highways 13 and 580 make it attractive for thieves. looking for a quick getaway? >> can you call 911? >> neighbors say there have been numerous car break ins and now brazen burglaries in broad daylight. >> what is the next step? you

know, they're just getting bolder. and their actions. >> neighbors want the city to install license plate readers and assign beat officers. >> they're going to come in at night on us and who's going to stop it? like, when is it going to stop? i'm very anxious right now. i feel violated, of course, witnesses tell me this is the suspect vehicle, a black bmw sedan. >> they describe the suspects as being young, late teens to early 20s. they have their faces covered. i reached out to oakland police. they would only confirm that there have been three home break ins on that one block. greg. >> yeah, certainly frustrating for those homeowners. amber. thank you. new at 11 police in san francisco arrested two men accused of luring victims with online marketplace ads and then robbing them. police say javonte powell and jermaine williams would list an item for sale online, usually a car, for under $5,000 arranged to meet a potential buyer and then robbed

them at gunpoint. police say the suspects are connected to at least eight incidents last year. both men are now facing numerous charges. >> new at 11, a man is under arrest in connection with a shooting at a party in clear lake that left two year old boy dead, authorities say fernando lugo garcia was arrested in petaluma yesterd. he was wanted in connection th that shooting that happened on march 23rd. sonoma officials say they were familiar with the suspect from previous gang related contacts. he is now being held without bail on murder and other charges. >> also new at 11 dozens gathered in san francisco today to honor families impacted by homicide. the event started as a march from margaret hayward park and ended at city hall with speeches from city leaders and victims, advocates. organizers say they hope to bring attention to the mothers, fathers and families who have lost loved ones due to homicides and allow them to express their grief and pain. >> everyone has a loved one. everyone has someone that they care for, and when you take the

life, it affects everybody, not just one person. every you know. >> police chief bill scott also spoke at the event. he says homicides are down in the city. a newly formed group of san francisco merchants is calling for the resignation of the director of san francisco muni. >> the group vomano stands for the valencia association of merchants, artists, neighbors and organizations, they say. sfmta director jeff tumlin has failed to meet the needs of san francisco residents with inaction. quit management of public transportation. this comes as businesses are calling for the controversial center bike lane to be removed. the group says their group will also offer a platform for underrepresented and diverse voices. >> residents flock to san jose's downtown tonight as the city kicked off its summer block party event. new tonight ktvu lamonica peters spoke with some of the business owners, who say the event serves as a way to highlight their businesses. >> at san jose's fountain alley downtown, the first block party

of the summer kicked off with live music vendor booths, local artists and access to restaurants nearby like, that's honestly like what i like about like the bay area. >> like, you have everything here. >> like especially with all these events that are going on more downtown. >> the urban vibrancy institute and the city of san jose have partnered to bring more attention to small business since last year. district three council member omar torres and san jose mayor matt marin talked about the impact the block parties have had on the community. >> we heard from small businesses that they would sometimes make an entire month's rent in one night. when we just came out with live music and vendors and threw a block party, it's easy and cheap to do. it takes a little bit of planning and coordination. >> our downtown is seeing an uptick right? we are recovering. so downtown is open for business. this.

seems to have ingested a wire from her meal, forcing her to rush to the hospital. >> the story begins tonight's west coast rap. the incident happened back in march. the woman says it's left her apprehensive about food consumption, not only for herself but also for her children. she says she took a second bite of her meal and felt something lodged in her throat. she asserts that panda express must revise its cleaning procedures, suggesting that the wire may have originated from a grill brush. the lawsuit against panda express claims negligence and is seeking relief for the woman's pain and suffering. the chain did not comment on the legal action in hawaii. >> hundreds of people in maui say they are having difficulty breathing and are showing signs of compromised lungs after the deadly wildfires there last august. that's according to a new study from the university of hawaii. researchers say many people did not seek medical help because they were forced to focus on finding housing work

and food. scientists hope to raise awareness now about the need for more health specialists on the islands. >> in sacramento, a part of a government building had to be evacuated because of a suspicious package. this afternoon, lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis confirmed a suspicious package delivered to that government building did not contain anthrax. that package contained a threat, saying it did. all staff and senators were asked to leave the government building. kounalakis is in san francisco and was not part of the evacuation. governor newsom is currently in italy. it is not clear how many people were inside that building. and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs at 7:00 monday through friday, or find around the clock coverage at west coast rap.com. >> berkeley police held a seminar today directed toward senior drivers. >> the mission of the class is to improve the driving skills of older people, ktvu tom vacar reports. >> but it is kind of a class that came about by a need.

>> berkeley police officer stephanie cole walked him. 31 senior citizens to the north berkeley senior center for an elderly driving seminar, a sometimes touchy subject. >> a lot of folks are coming to the class. it's about an hour long, and it's nice to have folks show up and have that dialog and that conversation, she says. >> there are well over 5 million california senior drivers, two thirds of whom take five or more medications a day. on average. elderly drivers outlive their actual ability to drive by 5 to 7 years. >> i am very concerned because i'm getting to the point where i'm thinking, how long can i drive and when should i give up? >> we got to be honest with ourselves. nobody wants to hurt somebody else. yeah, talk to your doctor. talk to your friends. talk to your family. if your family can't tell you, i don't know who can. >> there were many tips to extend driving, even with some physical limitations, including avoiding rush hours, staying off

freeways and driving during daylight. but the potential mental limitations were top of mind. >> this is a topic we don't want to face have to face. >> it's designed to have that conversation not only for the people here that are driving, but their friends and their family. so by not necessarily saying this is you, this is your problem. it's just saying, hey, there's a conversation we should have. >> there are a lot of drivers that are over 65, and they want to know, and they want to be safe, and they want to obey the rules and the laws of this land. >> it's like a muscle. you have to use your muscle all the time. if you don't use it, you lose it and kind of being cognitive of driving is the same way. you have to think about it. >> fact is, better medicine will also keep many more, but not all seniors driving. >> modern science allows us to improve the body we have as things wear out. and i think that's a great hope and a great

anniversary of the east bay regional park district today by introducing a congressional resolution celebrating the milestone and recognizing the district's service to the east bay. representative mark desaulnier recognized the park district on the house floor. the park district is made up of more than 70 regional parks and more than 1300 miles of trails in alameda and contra costa counties. it has grown to be the largest regional park district of its kind in the nation. >> all right, let's get a final check of our weather with meteorologist bill martin. and bill, i have not seen the sun in two days in the north bay where i live, but it's pretty. the fog is nice. >> yeah, yeah. well, a long time ago, when i started in this business, i said, boy, it's a bummer. the fog is back at the coast and a bunch of people from pacifica wrote in and goes, no, we love the fog. so people love it. so the weather is going to get better. there's going to be less fog. there's going to be less low clouds as we head into

saturday and sunday. but you're right, greg. i mean, we've got a lot of clouds moving inland the last couple of days. and that's created some really foggy conditions, especially out there in mill valley and places along the coast like sebastopol and areas down on the pigeon point area, down towards pescadero. these are the highs from today. highs tomorrow will be a little warmer today. cool. tomorrow is going to be a little bit warmer. and overall we're looking at temperatures that will be a good 2 or 3 degrees warmer than they were today, maybe four degrees. and that puts us back into the low 80s. this is the forecast for the microclimates. as you move across the bay and 60s around the bay, a little warmer inland, 70s, mid 70s and then 80s, upper 70s, low 80s in the very warmest spots. so antioch and clayton in those spots, marine layer stretching out. it's already up over 1500ft. so it's pushing inland. that has a huge impact on the temperatures and how the cloud cover. look at that extent of cloud cover. that's the model saying tomorrow morning it's going to look like that and it burns off. oh, so slowly. and that leaves behind a cooler day. and that's why temperatures are going to be

mild the next couple of days. because of that very big deep marine layer. these are the current temperatures. and you can kind of see the dark greens that would almost represent the sea breeze. right the modified air mass that's coming in with the sea breeze moisture and cooler and that's that dark green. even those blues over by novato. the model says this tomorrow morning and then tomorrow afternoon, saturday morning fog comes back low, clouds burns off quicker. saturday. right. look at that. and then sunday doesn't start. starts off with less fog. ends up with mostly sunny even at the coast. but it's going to be slightly cooler. so it's unusual. right? you go. wow, the fog is gone, but it's going to be cooler. okay, well, that's the plan. there's a low pressure to the north of us, and that's the mechanism for the cooling that gets here saturday and sunday. here are the high temperatures forecast for tomorrow. a little warmer, probably the warmest day. we'll see for a few days as we cool off into the weekend and warm up a little bit next week. but no heat waves. there's no big 9095

degree days coming our way for at least a seven or 8 to 10 days. >> nice and steady and mild bill. thank you. a bill that would protect wildfire victims in california from having to pay taxes on their settlement money or attorney's fees, is moving forward. north bay congressman mike thompson says a bipartisan group of lawmakers has advanced a discharge petition that will force house speaker mike johnson to bring that bill to the floor for a vote. it's the first time a petition has been used in nine years, and just the third time in the past two decades, a vote is expected within the next ten days. >> a bill proposed by a bay area lawmaker that would give local governments more control over autonomous vehicles in california is now one step closer to becoming law. today district 15 senator dave cortese announced his oversight for autonomous vehicle services. bill advanced out of the senate appropriations committee. that bill still needs a vote in the full senate and the assembly before heading to the governor. >> the california high-speed rail authority released a progress report today on the decades long project to connect northern and southern california

with a high speed rail line. most of the 500 mile project connecting san francisco to the los angeles area has now received environmental clearance. the rail authority says the central valley is the building block of the system, and significant progress is being made in that region. the authority has advanced construction to establish future electrified high speed rail from merced to bakersfield. rail authority board members met today to hear updates on this long term project. >> if we can all just keep the big picture in mind, that will probably not be completed before many of us are on this earth, but we have to look to the future to make sure that this is going to be high speed rail for san diego, la, central valley to the bay area. >> officials say the project is on pace to meet its goal to complete a crucial section of the system in the central valley by the early 2030s. >> here's a look now at some of the stories trending tonight on

entertainment included a pageant to crown the queen of the fair. there are a lot of rides, petting zoo exhibits and music and of course, food as well. the fair runs for four days until this sunday. tickets cost $12, and the santa cruz beach boardwalk is celebrating a major milestone this weekend. the giant dipper roller coaster. it's turning 100 years old. that ride first opened on may 17th, 1924. it is one of the oldest operating roller coaster in the world. the boardwalk is holding celebrations all summer long, starting with a fireworks celebration on the beach this saturday night. there will also be a lot of discounted rides, art contests, and special giant dipper merch. >> sounds like a good time. also this weekend, an annual auction to help raise money for the niad art center in richmond is bigger than ever. the studio supports

adults with disabilities. the organization's annual win win fundraiser is being held saturday. the event will feature the auction and performance by niad artists. earlier today on the four, we heard from the executive director about how their artists are expanding into music and poetry. >> our traditional practices are very strong paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry. right, but in the past three years, i would say halici and other poets at niad have really broken boundaries with spoken word performance. and we'll see all of that on stage at win win. >> now, that event starts at 3 p.m. saturday at the bridge. art space on main avenue in richmond, and you can also bid on art on niaid's website. niad has a goal of raising $100,000 this weekend. >> new at 11 tonight, the city of clayton announced the return of the largest pride parade in contra costa county. that parade will kick off on june 2nd. the theme this year is clayton
