popped up just blocks away. and school leaders call this one a crime. what we know about this new development. then people all across the bay area and beyond leaving their cars at home this morning, jumping on two wheels instead by biking to work, school or wherever is more than a heart healthy move from ktvu. >> fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> we are so glad you're here. good morning. i'm gasia mikaelian and good morning, i'm dave clark. >> thursday morning, may 16th i know yesterday you saw fog coming in today. >> same thing, same thing. kind of right around the caldecott tunnel in oakland. >> okay. and you have steve paulson with you today. thank goodness he's back. >> your driver. right. cos you're i said slow down a little. i'm drinking my tea, drinking my coffee. yeah. thank you. all right. thank you dave garcia. we do have a little bit of sun breaks. very little, but there are some out there. sfo is one, but most locations say cloudy to mostly cloudy and pretty mild here. 50s on the temps. we are getting a west or a southwest breeze. first images
7:01 am
of the visible satellite show there are a few breaks san jose for some, but boy it's pretty solid here for most of the north and there's just a lot out there. maybe a little drizzle. so we are looking for when the fog rolls in. boy has it ever last couple of days, that's for sure. today is no exception. it'll peel back to the coast. it will be sunny, breezy inland, 60s and 70s on those temps. well, you're about ready to jump into your cadillac cadillac and head out on the highways and byways. here's the man to guide you through. >> well, i thank you, steve. and right now we do see some commutes look pretty ordinary. others do not. the bay bridge is one. perhaps you're heading over to san francisco and traffic is doing okay. you're going to see a little bit of slow traffic there, this morning. but if you are driving on the san mateo bridge. oh my, my, we do have a bunch of slow traffic. and this is due to an earlier stalled vehicle. things are getting better, but it's going to take a little while for it to loosen up. when we come back, i want to show you the nimitz freeway and
7:02 am
parts of the east bay that are very slow, but first, let's go to the headlines. >> the president of sonoma state says he made a mistake, sent an email to the college community making promises to student protesters without proper approval. ktvu james torres live at the sonoma state campus here, where a tent encampment is now gone and that president is temporarily off the job. james garcia, we're just outside of person theater here at sonoma state university's campus, and i want to show you the lawn behind me. >> this is where the encampment, the tent encampment used to be. the sidewalk next to it, as of just about an hour ago, was covered in chalk with pro-palestinian messages and even messages in support of president mike lee, who is now on administrative leave. we saw as university employees came out and scrubbed off the chalk with water and brooms. all of this after the california state university chancellor called lee insubordinate for making terms of her in agreement with those student protesters, sonoma state university is part of the csu system. in a statement, csu chancellor mildred garcia wrote
7:03 am
the message was sent without the appropriate approvals. i want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and community members to see and read. the message she's referring to is a campus wide alert from president lee. he had met with students twice during their more than two week long demonstration. he says the university came to a few agreements, which include disclosing the university's investments with a pro-palestinian student advisory council and even considered divestment strategy strategies. he also promised an academic boycott against programs that are, quote, sponsored by or represent the state of israel. but the csu system says they did not agree to any of those terms. in the latest statement from lee sent yesterday, he acknowledges a mistake and says he sent his message without the proper approvals part of it reading quote in my attempt to find
7:04 am
agreement with one one group of students, i marginalized other members of our student population and community. i realize the harm that this has caused and i take full ownership of it. i deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions. as we've just shown you, tents from the encampment at sonoma state are now gone. the csu chancellor says that she is reviewing the matter and has already appointed an interim university president. according to the press democrat, some students here at the university are planning some sort of demonstration during the commencement ceremonies, which are expected to begin this saturday. reporting live this morning, i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> okay, james thank you. time now. 704 well, today, classes at uc irvine will be held online after a showdown on the campus between the police and pro palestinian protesters. we are. now, the protesters took over
7:05 am
the physical sciences building. they blocked the entrance. that's when university police called for help. and hundreds of law enforcement officers in riot gear rushed over to the campus. many of the demonstrators were detained when they wouldn't leave, as the university declared their protest was an unlawful assembly. no more business as usual. >> when 15,000 children were bombed in the past three months. no more business as usual. we all love each other. we all care about each other, our people, our humanitarian standing up for human rights here now, we don't know yet if any of the protesters were formally arrested or just detained. >> that encampment that had been on campus for a few weeks was also cleared out. now, protesters who had been at sproul plaza on the cal campus packed up and went to uc merced. that's where uc regents are meeting. they want the regents to divest from companies that give support to israel during the war in gaza, an investment
7:06 am
officer for uc said the uc system could lose $32 billion dollars of its $175 billion in assets if it agreed to the demands of the students to divest uc officials have already said they do not plan to divest. >> but less than a day after one group of pro-palestinian protesters packed up their encampment on the uc berkeley campus, a new group has taken over a university building and says it plans to stay. dozens of protesters entered the anna head alumni hall yesterday, breaking boarded up windows spraying graffiti. the building had been vacant since 2022. at this point, it's unclear how many protesters are inside university. police are calling this an active crime scene. some students who live nearby say they're not alarmed by the demonstration. >> i'm really glad that people are expressing, like, their opinion and are able to like, you know, voice their beliefs and everything, especially like in peaceful manners, like it's not like they're disturbing or like disrupting or like hurting anyone. >> the university would not tell
7:07 am
us if campus police have plans to get the people out of the building or shut down the encampment inside, across the bay and happening today in san francisco, city leaders and police will march to honor families who've lost loved ones to homicide members of the mayor's office and the district attorney, brooke jenkins, will join the marchers, among others. the group will march from margaret hayward park to the steps of city hall. the group there has planned speeches and afterward will host a dinner for guests. today's march takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. >> our time now 707 today, donald trump's defense lawyers continuing to cross-examine michael cohen at donald trump's criminal trial in new york. those defense lawyers are trying to portray michael cohen as someone who has repeatedly lied, are trying to put some doubt about his testimony that implicates trump in a scheme that includes falsifying business records. michael cohen is the last witness for the prosecution before trump's lawyers can call their own witnesses. >> new this morning, governor newsom is at the vatican, where
7:08 am
he just delivered remarks on climate change as part of the vatican's climate summit. pope francis is hosting a three day vatican climate summit and, along with governor newsom, there are regional government leaders and climate experts from around the world. today's session is focused on mayors and governors on how they're dealing with climate change. >> the huts are getting a lot hotter, the dries are getting a lot drier, the wets are getting a lot wetter. the extremes, not just extremes, mother nature extremes in our politics as well, and it marks the moment in many respects. we're in how do we together address those extremes? >> this moment, as part of his trip to italy, the governor will also visit the city of bologna to talk about a new climate partnership with northern italy. well, happening today, people across the bay and beyond are joining a nationwide celebration promoting bikes as a way to commute. we used to call this bike to work day, but now the annual event is called bike to
7:09 am
wherever day, a change that reflects the fact that many people's work and commute habits have shifted since the pandemic started. several cities around the bay area have events planned for this morning to celebrate and encourage people riding their bikes. >> time is 709 or 708 and 50s to be precise. let's go right out and take a look at the commute at the bay bridge toll plaza. you will see the traffic is going to be busy as you drive through the major problems there. however, the commute is looking okay if you are driving through there. i do want to mention though that the east bay commute is busy on highway four and 680. that looks pretty ordinary. however, out of the ordinary is a long backup. we have on 880 between hayward and fremont. it was set back by some earlier crashes. those crashes are gone, but the slow traffic remains. 709 let's go back to the desk. >> all right. well, it's one of the most important cases ever decided by the us supreme court. 70 years later, president biden

the bay in east oakland thanks to a bluetooth tracking device. >> but when he called oakland police asking for help, he says it was not a priority. ktvu is andre senior in the studio now. you have the details. >> you put a lot of work into trying to get his truck back. yeah, we'll tell you about it. now, that man tells us he's frustrated with police for how they handled the incident. yesterday morning, a group of thieves stole a dodge ram pickup truck from outside of his home in redwood city. the owner used a bluetooth tracking device to track his car to east oakland. he says when he found his vehicle on the road, he called oakland police several times, but he didn't get any help. he decided to call us here at ktvu, and when we contacted police, things seemed to speed up, telling them i could see the truck. >> i have a tracker, i can remote start it, i can turn on the lights and they're saying too busy, don't care. it wasn't until the news got involved. we're also they're kicked into high gear. >> an hour later, he received a call from redwood city saying that oakland police had towed his car. ktvu was present when
7:14 am
he went to the tow yard to retrieve his truck. opd didn't say whether they made any arrests in the theft, and for now, the victim says he's worried if nothing happens, the thieves will come back to try and steal his truck again in a matter of time, till it happens again. >> and where is it going to be found next? and what are they going to do? how long it's going to take for them to respond? i feel like the criminal justice system is failing in california, and it's this is a symptom of it. >> he believes the same group cased his home about two weeks ago, and that prompted him to install the security cameras that captured the theft. the victim says he plans to install a kill switch on his tow truck, so that will hopefully stop thieves from stealing his truck again. dave. all right. >> andre. thank you. time 714 renovation work at the harvey milk terminal at san francisco international airport is almost finished, and ktvu was given a sneak peek by next month, the final phase of the $2.5 billion project is scheduled to be finished. it features new baggage self-check kiosks that are designed to be faster than traditional bag check ins. the
7:15 am
terminal is also designed to move passengers and their luggage through security 30% faster, rather than having to take multiple tubs to put all of your belongings into it, you're going to use one large tray that has everything your carry on, your shoes, your belt. >> it all goes into a single tray, and once you get through security, all of the terminals will be interconnected to allow people to wander around during long layovers, early check ins, or even delays. >> the refurbished and expanded parts of terminal one are due to open on june 11th. >> this summer. uber is launching a shuttle bus service to and from airports, concerts and sporting events. users will be able to reserve up to five seats from a central location for less than a regular uber ride. the new service will initially be available in miami, chicago, pittsburgh and charlotte. there are plans to expand it to more cities in the future. uber is launching a service to let people book rides and order medical supplies for people they care for. the
7:16 am
company says. the uber caregiver program will help people who rely on caregivers for support. they'll be able to add them directly to their profile, starting this summer, the company says. it's also rolling out other new savings, including discounted memberships for students. >> okay, gasia time is 715. right? back to sound. did you fix everything out there? >> well, we're trying to give people a heads up about the east bay commute there. dave and garcia, right now southbound 880 is slow from the hayward area all the way to fremont because of earlier issues, most of those things are out of the lanes. we also had a stalled vehicle near the san mateo bridge. i want to zoom in now here on the south bay. we're getting a little more slow traffic, but you still have an opportunity to get out there before it gets too slow. so go ahead and get out there quick if you can. there have been no major issues there. let's go to the bay bridge and show you the traffic here at the toll plaza is pretty typical and steve, we like ordinary. we don't like
7:17 am
surprises at 716, as i talked. toss it to you. keep talking so well, steve, when i looked at the sky, it's overcast. >> it is. oh, my, my thank you sal. appreciate that. see what you did there. all right i see what you did all right. temperatures i'll buy into this for a i think so everything for the rest of may is looking near average to slightly below. does not look like any rain, but the temperature trend taking us into early june should favor near normal temps to below for drizzle. sunny, breezy boy, there's a downright roaring wind for some out towards the delta, that's for sure. just too much gray water temps have come up a little bit, but we get a little south southeast breeze and that has allowed temperatures on the water temps to come up. so instead of 49 or 50, they're now 55, 55, 56, 55, but still there's just so much overcast here and we get more of an onshore wind. for some it's generally most locations have a west southwest breeze,
7:18 am
especially out to travis 2930 seven miles per hour. that is screaming napa, west concord, oakland west, southwest even out toward now san jose, mountain view, palo alto. that's a southeast breeze. same for half moon bay. even sfo, although hayward and livermore have a west wind. 5060 vacaville brentwood bookends on 6050s for most. they're stuck. a few sun breaks in there. but look at all that gray. i mean, my goodness, there's just so much here. it would take a north or northeast wind or strong high pressure to kind of erode it. and i just don't see that happening today. drizzle looks likely nights and mornings here. next couple of days, maybe not this much, but you get the idea. there's going to be some drizzle. so a lot of gray over the bay some some breaks. but there's a lot of fog out there. it'll head back to the coast. sunny breezy, 60s 70s. just subtle day to day changes. no extreme one way or the other. a little warmer one day, a little cooler the next. you guys. >> thank you. steve. san francisco is just more than a month away from its pride celebration. how the city is planning to keep everyone safe

nature's air conditioning no doubt. is making a big push. there are some sun breaks, especially towards the peninsula south bay, sfo, but northward it is sold out for almost everyone. low clouds have made it all the way up northern sonoma county into mendocino county. 50s on the temps. we are getting a southeast breeze, palo alto, san jose so you can see some of the breaks there. but boy, i'll tell you, even out to fairfield, the low clouds made it. that's a pretty good push. there's a lot out there. once it retreats back, but when the fog rolls in, temperatures probably aren't going to be that warm. so we'll go 60s and 70s had a little drizzle this morning. it's probably about over unless you're in the hills there, but 60s and also 70s on those temps. all right sal, good. bad indifferent. what's going on out there? >> it's pretty good. you know, you might have a chance to listen to a mister mister song. steve, on your radio soul sister. let's go out. i'm so glad that that train we're talking about train, obviously. and they referenced soul sister or mister. mister, let's go to the bay bridge. you can see it's an ordinary commute. we don't

like surprises. the other day we had that surprise with the paving work in orinda and, you know, lafayette area. today it's much better than that. we have some slow traffic on 680 and highway four. all of it is very typical commute traffic here. the nimitz freeway did have some slowing on 880 south between hayward and fremont. that's improving. now. this more like a normal commute and 680 is slow right off the get go from dublin interchange heading down to highway 84. 732 let's get back to the headlines okay, sal. >> thank you. well governor gavin newsom is at the vatican. it's part of a summit on fighting climate change organized by pope francis. >> newsom is one of three us governors invited to attend here . allie rasmus in studio to explain what the governor is doing and the goal of the summit. >> ali well, early this morning, garcia and dave, governor newsom spoke before an auditorium full of policy makers and researchers from across the globe. they've all gathered at the vatican for a three day summit on climate change. now, the goal of this meeting is to come up with

ideas, solutions and an overall blueprint on how local governments can become more climate resilient in the face of extreme weather and extreme politics. at the end of the summit, participants will take that list of ideas to the united nations. now, newsom spoke on the second day of this meeting. the governors of massachusetts, new york and boston's mayor were also invited to attend and speak. the conference is supposed to be a political. the pope does not endorse political candidates directly. but during his remarks overnight, governor newsom talked about our state's commitment to clean energy despite any changes in national politics or the presidency. >> regardless of what happens at the federal level. and if there's anything i want to impress upon you, is the stability of california's relationship to the issue of changing the way we produce and consume energy and the issue of environmental stewardship, regardless of what happens at the national level, we are trusted and stable partner. >> now, tomorrow, governor newsom will head to bologna.
7:34 am
that's a province in the northern part of italy. he is expected to sign a partnership with some local leaders there to work on ways to reach 100% clean energy and share ideas on energy independence. the governor's office says that trip to italy is being paid for through a nonprofit called the california state protocol foundation, which gets its money from private donations. garcia >> ali. rasmus. thank you. more than a month before san francisco's pride weekend, organizers are focused on security in the face of an fbi warning about possible terrorist threats. >> if you see something, say something. report suspicious activity to law enforcement, event security or management from all of us with the san francisco police department, have a safe and happy pride. >> sfpd is taking a proactive approach following that notice from the fbi and department of homeland security. we're working to learn more from sfpd about what the enhanced security measures will look like, and whether the department has received any specific threats related to pride weekend, which is set for june 29th and 30th.

we have new video now of the first week on the job for oakland's new police chief. >> can i take this obligation freely without any mental reservation? >> the city released this video of police chief floyd mitchell's private swearing in ceremony this week. chief mitchell is meeting with members of opd, city leaders and community stakeholders. we don't yet have a date from the city for a public ceremony. >> okay guys, your time. 734 student protesters at san francisco state university are taking down their encampment after reaching an agreement with the school's president. they say school officials agreed to make its investment portfolio more transparent and will divest from any company that makes weapons. and immediately after the announcement, the protesters started packing up their tents. student organizers say this agreement doesn't address all of their demands, but they call it a strong first step. >> the only demand that we haven't currently met is declared declaring it a genocide, calling it what it is,
7:36 am
which is still very important and something that we're going to continue to work on through the summer and into the fall. >> the organizers also say they want to bring all csu students together to make a systemwide change. well, the artist who created an iconic sculpture at san jose state, talk to student demonstrators there who set up encampments at the foot of his protest piece. >> you know, this statue has always been meant to be of service to you so that you could use use it for your advocacy, like. >> that was rigo 23. he created the famous statue that shows olympic track and field stars tommie smith and john carlos raising their fists in the black power salute at the 1968 olympic games. both athletes attended san jose state. now, the artist told us that sculpture includes an empty space representing student activists.

7:39 am
a lot of people work from home. apparently on friday this is a look closer look now at 880. it's slow right from the get go at 238 all the way to union city peninsula traffic looks good with a little slowing on the bayshore freeway. 280 is your friend today. it looks pretty good driving up to san francisco. no major problems. if you're going to the airport, you should use 101. otherwise, drive by 280. i like 280. this morning . well, steve, weather's been kind of predictable this week. clouds in the morning and then sunny later on. >> sal, if i'm going to the airport, i'm already there. >> that's that's true. you get there three hours early saying we're here. >> right. all right. thank you, sir. yes. you're right. correct. on the weather. it has been one where we get night morning fog. is that kind of a year? you know, so far, i don't think this is changing all that much. what is changing is the snow is melting up in the sierras. you might imagine. but, you know, the reservoirs are full.
7:40 am
