joseph roberts guilty of second degree murder. >> our crime reporter henry lee was in the courtroom when that verdict was read. he joins us now after talking with the victim's family and the district attorney. >> henry, mike and julie, the victim had a rocky relationship with a man now convicted of killing her. they say police in pleasanton failed to take action before she died. >> today means that i can breathe a little bit easier, but i know it's not over. >> as jamila buckner is filled with a mix of emotion. on monday in alameda county, jury convicted joseph roberts of second degree murder for killing her daughter rachel elizabeth and monty buckner. authorities say roberts killed his 27 year old girlfriend in their pleasanton apartment. her remains washed up on the alameda shoreline near the bay farm island bridge on july 20th. she was wrapped in tape and her head, hands and feet were missing. >> what today's verdict means for me is that i don't have to look over my shoulder for right now. i've lived in trauma, in

terror. authorities say roberts never reported buckner missing and instead began talking with three other women. >> buckner was two months shy from earning her degree from golden gate university law school. >> there was sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt based on the dna evidence and other circumstantial evidence, da pamela price, who has made it a priority not to let cases languish, noted that this murder trial moved very quickly through the criminal justice system. we appreciate that the case was speedily disposed of relative to the way the normal course of cases in our system, and we believe that justice has been served. >> family and friends say pleasanton police missed warning signs about roberts during earlier visits. >> they should have arrested him on the spot. regard less of what she said. we watched body cam footage of them chatting it up as he was beating her down 17

times. >> the police came out and did barely anything. this is an injustice that should never have happened. >> now the defense declined to comment. today. on june 14th, roberts is expected to be sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. i'll reach out to pleasanton police for response to the allegations but have not heard back live in the studio, henry lee, ktvu, fox two news the man convicted of attacking congresswoman nancy pelosi's husband paul, with a hammer is scheduled to be sentenced on friday. >> federal prosecutors want the judge to sentence david de pap to the maximum punishment of 40 years in prison, saying he shows no remorse for the crime. de pap was convicted last november on federal charges for the 2022 attack. a separate trial on state charges has yet to begin. >> grand jury transcripts are providing new information in the case of a los gatos woman charged with hosting alcohol fueled sex parties for teenagers. 49 year-old shannon o'connor remains in jail

awaiting trial on more than 20 felony counts. more than 2000 pages of transcripts were released friday. they include the testimony of more than a dozen teenagers who attended her parties. they claim she invited them to her home as part of her effort to make her teenage son more popular. the teenagers say they were encouraged to drink alcohol and engage in sexual activity. they also said she often tried to hide these parties from her husband and their neighbors. >> there was a small protest outside sacred heart today in san jose. organizers say they are upset over the firing of derek sanderlin. he is the leader of several groups at the community service center. they say his work has made a big impact on the entire advocacy community in santa clara county. organizers are now urging sacred heart to reinstate sanderlin. >> we are absolutely outraged that derek sanderlin was fired for very dubious reasons. is at the 11th hour of a campaign we have been working on for two years, sacred heart says it

could not comment because this is a personnel issue. >> new at five san francisco's municipal transportation agency is working right now to bring two dozen new fare inspectors on board after a surge in fare evaders. ktvu is christian captain live tonight in san francisco and christian, i mean, if people see other passengers getting on for free here, i believe they probably think they can do the same thing. >> yeah, that's exactly the problem here, mike, is that fare evasion tends to build momentum. now, the sfmta is trying to bring more fare inspectors on board these muni trains and busses to try to stop that momentum in its tracks. muni carries more than 440,000 weekday riders through the streets of san francisco. while the majority of passengers pay their way, muni estimates that as many as 1 in 5 riders doesn't pay. passengers say that doesn't surprise them. yeah >> you know, in san francisco, everybody's trying to get their

way out there on the bus as you go. any other city, you got to pay. >> sfmta says before the pandemic, about 12% of passengers didn't pay. now, the agency says about 20% of riders skip out on paying. the sfmta says it is in the process of bringing two dozen new fare inspectors online who will hit the road july 1st, riding transit and making sure everyone has proof of payment. >> what we've seen in the data is a very, very strong correlation between the presence of fare inspectors and people paying their correct fare. >> the sfmta says fares account for about a quarter of its income. >> we can't sustain muni service without people paying their fair fare, it is about a quarter of our operators salary. if we're not able to bring fare compliance up a bit, we will have no choice but to reduce muni service to keep the new fare inspectors safe. >> they work in groups of three and can use radios to call for help if they see a potentially

dangerous person or activity. >> the fare inspectors are a huge part of our safety program. they're very presence on the vehicle helps to make sure that everything stays chill. >> and as we said earlier, mta says seeing people not pay can make riders think they don't have to pay either. but the agency says a lot of those riding who don't appear to be paying have in fact paid for their rides if they have the muni app, for example, they don't need to tag in like clipper card users. and remember, there are a lot of people who ride for free on muni, including kids, the elderly, and the disabled. we're live in san francisco, christien, kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, christian, thank you. >> federal highway safety investigators are taking a closer look into amazon's self-driving robotaxi fleet after two small accidents. the incidents, excuse me, involve two zoox, amazon vehicles operating in autonomous mode. amazon says the cars suddenly braked and were rear ended by motorcyclists, both of whom suffered minor injuries. the new

investigation will focus on the autonomous automated driving system during the crashes, which is developed by the company zoox, based in foster city. they released a statement saying they will cooperate with the investigation. >> then tonight, the oakland community is mourning the loss of two longtime east bay political leaders who were killed in a car crash over the weekend. peggy moore and her wife, hope wood, were killed in san diego county friday night. both built solid ties in oakland and really beyond working with former president barack obama advising former oakland mayor libby schaaf and even starting their own political consulting firm. peggy moore was 60 years old. her wife, hope, was 48. oakland mayor shengtao released a statement saying, their commitment to our city and invaluable contributions to our political fabric will forever be remembered. peggy and hope's warmth, determination and boundless love for oakland will continue to inspire us as we honor their legacy. >> writing a new chapter for the oakland police department. ahead at 530. chief floyd mitchell's

>> protesters gathered in palo alto on mother's day to bring more attention to the mothers and children suffering in gaza. people gathered at the corner of el camino real and embarcadero for the weekly vigil for gaza event, where they special focus this time around on the mothers living in gaza. >> as a mom, the stress of having a newborn baby in normal times, it's a lot for any mom. to do that during war and during what's happening now, like in rafah. i mean, no one has housing. >> the group says it started a mothers day campaign with a goal of raising $5,000. the money will help fund a new neonatal intensive care unit for premature babies at the kuwaiti hospital in rafah. >> new at five tonight, members of the islamic community are denouncing an attack on its members, who were hanging a banner on a peninsula overpass. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary has video now of the attack and reaction.

>> while the region celebrated cinco de mayo just days ago, this profanity laced tirade taking place at the same time became the latest instance of disunity. i was incredibly surprised the target of the attack was a man we'll call g, as he wants to conceal his identity. he says he and another pro-palestine advocate were hanging two banners on this pedestrian overpass above highway 101, near pierce road and alpine avenue. the unidentified man walks up and demands they remove the banners or else i immediately feared for my life in a way, because he was saying it like so loud, and he was like kind of shouting it like i just felt like, okay, what if he attacks us? >> if we don't take this down? >> the pair agreed to remove their signs and leave, but they say the suspect became more agitated and aggressive. he allegedly threw their personal items over the fence and onto the roadway's shoulder below. demonstrators say they've hung banners on overpasses around the peninsula before and were on

this particular overpass just a month ago without incident. >> it is frightening to see so many incidents of violence that endanger members of my community and other human rights advocates, continuing care san francisco executive director zahara ballou says. >> there have been six similar incidents around the bay over the past six months, including a knife wielding, man shredding a pro-palestine banner above the 880 freeway last december. >> we are facing a 30 year high in anti-muslim and anti-palestinian hate. >> jews have also been targeted. this nine foot menorah was desecrated at oakland's lake merritt also in december. >> we found pieces all over. it seems like it was chopped up, burnt, redwood city chp says there investigating this latest attack. >> this as the country and culture continue struggling with violent reactions to peaceful expressions of free speech. >> this issue is important enough to me and i think to us

move a little bit here towards the end of the week, but you basically see all the rain and showers pretty much going to the north of us with a slight disturbance down here. i don't know if i can draw that in. it's not showing up, but a slight disturbance down there. that little that little low that could set us up with some, you know, cooler, lower temperatures. but at this point, we'll see how that that's down the road. so here is the fog now. and you can see it's shooting across the bay. that's the move. this whole week the fog is going to do a move where it gets deeper and shallower. and it's going to you know, we see that all summer. it's a summer pattern. and so with that the fog is going to be living at the coast for the next few days. temperatures around the bay are going to hover in the 60s and mid 60s, 80s, low 70s. and then when you get inland, you're going to find the upper 70s to low to mid 80s. it's beautiful shot out there. you see the hills browning up a little bit as we get closer to the summer, the summer months you see some cumulus clouds off in the distance and i guess, yeah, this is out by pittsburgh, out by antioch. if you were looking kind of towards the east and

those are the wind farm out there by rio vista or close to rio vista. so kind of more towards antioch, pittsburgh area. either way, it's going to be a nice week ahead. it's not going to be hot, it's not going to be cold. it's going to be just right. we'll have the full forecast. we'll look at the five day as well, which has some subtle changes in it in a few minutes. >> all right. sounds good bill. thank you. a new retailer has signed a lease in san francisco's presidio. the city says pet food express will be among the first tenants of a renovated historic warehouse on mason street, right near crissy field. the pet store is scheduled to open by the end of the year. the oakland based company opened its first location in san francisco back in 1980. sports bassman, also planning to open an outlet at the complex there on the waterfront, a dog named nimble really lived up to her name at the westminster kennel club agility championships. >> this oh my gosh, i said it was going to be fun. >> i didn't know it was going to be an e ticket. >> she's got to be out ahead of him and there she goes.

distraction from requiring greater transparency over fees they charge their passengers. american delta and united, along with three other carriers, accused the transportation department of going beyond its authority by attempting to regulate private business operations. the lawsuit also argues a new rule would confuse consumers by giving them too much information during the ticket buying process. the white house says it will defend the

took the stand in mr. trump's new york fraud trial. >> ktvu janet katsuyama has been monitoring the development. she joins us now with the details. >> jana, julie and mike michael cohen was on the stand all day. he came across very composed and well prepared. he told the jury that trump was made aware of every step in the hush money payouts. michael cohen, the former attorney for donald trump, now a star witness against him, took the stand in new york monday. cohen testified that donald trump was involved in the plan to suppress stories of alleged sexual affairs in order to avoid harm to his 2016 presidential candidacy. cohen testified, quote, what i was doing was at the direction of

and benefit of mr. trump and later said, quote, everything required mr. trump's sign off. cohen said that in the months before the 2016 presidential election, trump directed him to handle secret hush money payments to former playmate karen mcdougal and star stormy daniels, who both alleged they had sexual affairs with trump. cohen testified about a secret recording where he said trump asked about paying david pecker. the national enquirer publisher, in cash, to buy and suppress mcdougal's story. >> so i'm i'm all over that. and i spoke to alan about it. when it comes time for the financing, which will be what financing we'll have to pay you. so no no no no no no no, i got. >> cohen said trump knew about the plans to conceal the payments by using fabricated bank accounts and reimbursements. prosecutors presented documents including a first republic bank account, which cohen testified was used for the $130,000 payout to stormy daniels. trump denies the

affairs and any knowledge of the payout cover ups, saying before court that he only knew of legal expenses for cohen. >> it's marked down in the book, quote, legal expense is perfectly marked down. >> the defense raised few objections during the testimony and is expected to cast doubt on cohen's credibility later this week. cohen served prison time for lying to congress and for federal charges involving the hush money cover ups. but his testimony monday follows a careful setup by prosecutors. according to uc law professor david levine. >> in this case, you've got extraordinary written documentation, you've got all of those ledger entries, you've got the checks signed by mr. trump, you've got evidence from other disinterested witnesses that the checks were written in new york and were fed ex down to washington and then sent back. >> and michael cohen is expected to take the stand again tomorrow for another day of testimony. mike and julie. >> all right. jana katsuyama reporting live for us tonight.

jana, thank you. >> a new poll shows donald trump still leading president biden in key battleground states, despite the former president spending more time in court than out there on the campaign trail. the new york times siena college poll has trump edging out biden in arizona, georgia, michigan, nevada and pennsylvania. now among the swing states, president biden is ahead only in wisconsin. analysts say trump has been gaining support in key groups that historically vote for democrats young, black and latino voters. >> he's winning in five of the six swing states, including way outside the margin of error in three of them. i mean, that's that puts him in shooting distance of 270 electoral votes. if he wins, those states. >> later this week, president biden is scheduled to participate in several events that honor black americans, including delivering the commencement address at morehouse college, the historically black liberal arts school in atlanta, independent presidential candidate robert kennedy junior is suing meta for alleged election interference.

>> the lawsuit claims a 30 minute biographical film titled who is bobby kennedy? was censored on facebook and instagram, both of which are owned by meta. kennedy's attorney says the case raises important issues about the censorship of political candidates by social media giants like meta. meta is not commenting on the lawsuit. >> new at five the us supreme court will allow lawsuits filed against the state over a deadly outbreak of covid to proceed. 26 prisoners, including one guard, as well, following a transfer of infected inmates from chino state prison to san quentin state prison in 2020, attorneys said the prisoners were not tested, were not quarantined. federal courts denied the state's claim of qualified immunity. they found that state prison officials can be held liable for harms caused by dangers it created or failed to prevent it. >> a somber ceremony in the north bay as police agencies across the country marked the start of national police week, the marin county sheriff's department held its annual peace officers memorial ceremony in

memory of the men and women who sacrificed their lives in service of their communities. this morning's tribute to those officers included a flag raising ceremony and a moment of silence. us attorney general merrick garland kicked off national police week by paying tribute at the national law enforcement officers memorial in washington, dc. the names of more than 23,000 officers have been carved onto the memorial wall, recognizing those who died in the line of duty. new names of fallen officers are added every year, and this year, oakland police officer tuan lay is among the 282 new names added to the memorial. lay was shot and killed while responding to a burglary in progress last december. a candlelight vigil is being held tonight at the national mall in dc to remember those fallen heroes. >> oakland's newest police chief is officially on the job. that's after the city went more than a year without a permanent chief. as ktvu james torres reports tonight, the chief's focus will be to immediately reduce crime.

>> the new police chief, floyd mitchell, is coming to oakland after serving as chief of police in lubbock, texas. he brings with him more than 30 years of law enforcement experience. >> i just wanted to take a moment to say, welcome to my first day as an oakland police chief. >> monday is the first look at floyd mitchell as oakland's police chief. for weeks, he's been meeting with opd leaders to learn about the department and its programs. he spoke to the next class of police recruits waiting for their day in academy. >> i've been in this profession probably longer than most of you have been alive. >> chief mitchell replaces former chief lauren armstrong, fired last year after the mayor's office flagged issues of handling cases of misconduct. an independent investigation cleared armstrong of any wrongdoing, but mayor tao said his attitude during the investigation made her less confident he could handle the job. chief mitchell takes over the agency at a time where

public safety is oakland's number one priority. >> i've spent the last few days attending some lineups to meet my officers. i'm going to spend the rest of this week attending different meetings to get brought up to speed on several different things going on within the oakland police department and within this community. >> robberies continue to be on the rise. >> my boyfriend's car just got broken into last week. >> however, this could be a turning point for the city. the mayor's office reporting homicides, assaults and burglaries are down in oakland, and over the weekend, 12 new police officers were welcomed into the department after graduating from the academy, a total now of 716 officers, more than 70 on medical leave. the department is now considered fully staffed. one man says hiring a chief out of town might be a challenge. >> you're going on paperwork, you're going on what somebody then told you or passing on to you. but if you were down here in the roots with the other, with the people, you would know the peoples. and so you know how

collapsed francis scott key bridge on monday. the 500 foot long span sits on top of a cargo ship that crashed into a support column in march, killing six construction workers. the vessel's 21 member crew remains on board during demolition. >> they are necessary to keep the ship safe and operational. if something were to happen, they are the in the best place to actually fight a fire on board the ship. >> the port of baltimore has been closed to most maritime traffic since the accident. coast guard officials say after demolition, they plan to refloat and remove the cargo ship in about two days, with the goal of fully reopening the port's permanent channel by the end of the month. >> there were some who, when we were here weeks ago, looked at the complexity of this operation and said this is going to take months. we've been able to get it done in a matter of weeks. >> in the weeks after the bridge collapsed, the federal government approved $60 million
