♪ significant developments on two of our college campuses. agreements have been reached between pro-palestinian protesters and administrators, both at uc berkeley and san francisco state. this video from the cal campus, where tents are being broken down and protesters are moving on. after 22 days of occupation, the encampment at uc berkeley is being dismantled. however, those protesters are on their way to uc merced. nbc bay area's tom jensen has the details. reporter the protesters did not achieve their ultimate goal of getting full uc system divestment in israel, but they may have opened some doors towards that goal, and they're going to keep the pressure on by moving to merced. all of the tents are down tonight at uc

berkeley, ending one of the longest running pro-palestinian encampments that have taken over u.s. campuses over the past few months. we realized that what we get a free palestine to all the amazing kind of get from the university in terms of our demands being met, have kind of been met to some extent. free. free palestine. free. what the protesters got from uc berkeley is a letter from the university's chancellor, where she promised to make a public statement supporting an immediate and permanent ceasefire in gaza. a negotiated with the free palestine movement on the berkeley campus. read from the letter. in one final rally on campus and honestly. a few months ago, it would have been surprising to get this document. the fact that i get to say there's more to win. there is still another fight. there is still another campaign that's within reach. the protesters did not get what they ultimately want from the uc system. total

divestment in israel and a system wide call for a ceasefire in gaza. but in that letter, chancellor chryst wrote the uc system does not support war. end quote. we should examine whether uc berkeley's investments continue to align with our values or should be modified in order to do so. she also made it clear she's in alignment with the uc system, which does not support a divestment in israel as a nation. the protesters say they hope to increase the pressure on the uc system by joining hundreds of more demonstrators in merced on wednesday, outside the uc board of regents meeting in berkeley. tom jensen nbc, bay area news. tom thank you. the pro-palestinian encampment at san jose state remains in place. this is night two for the protesters who are camped out. you see them there surrounding the school's iconic victory statue. so far, peaceful, but san jose state says the protesters need to go because the encampment violates university policy. the university releasing a statement

tonight saying in part, violence , vandalism and unprotected speech that promotes a hostile or harassing environment is prohibited by the law and csu policy. those in violation of the policy and or breaking the law will face consequences in mountain view protests outside google headquarters over its connection to israel as well, pro-palestinian demonstrators set up outside shoreline amphitheater today, where the company's annual developers conference was being held. demonstrators came out against google's work on project nimbus. it's a cloud service they say is providing facial recognition technology to the israeli military. there were no reports of any arrests. there well, tonight, alameda county supervisors voted to have the recall election for district attorney pamela price on november 5th, which is election day. many people wanted the recall actually earlier because they say public safety is on the line. here's nbc's terry mcsweeney. supervisor carson yes, president miley. yes. the

final vote of the board was three to nothing, with two supervisors excused from the proceeding. the county now on record for consolidation of the recall election on the same day as the presidential election, november 5th. supporters say it makes sense for a lot of reasons. we have a voter turnout on average of about 20% of folks who come out for voter special elections and 80% for a presidential election. another consideration is cost consolidation means saving perhaps tens of millions of dollars for a county that is $68 million in the red right now, spending $20 million on a standalone special election is something that we just cannot afford here in alameda county. we want our county services to be protected. many who spoke today supported the idea of an earlier standalone election, saying da prices soft on crime policies are costing lives. she has failed. everybody knows it. the sooner the better. we cannot wait till november to do

something about this. the people of alameda county need help. now, just to add one more wrinkle to the story, there's a group here today that not only doesn't want this election to be on november 5th, they don't want it to happen at all. they say that the way this got onto the ballot in the first place was illegal. a group called the campaign to protect the wind of pamela price says they're planning to go to court to stop the recall election. they say the registrar of voters took too long to verify the signatures on the recall petition. they violated a key provision of the charter that gave them ten days to verify those signatures. they took over a month to verify the signatures, price says the recall campaign was funded by billionaires and inspired by people who don't like the idea of a black district attorney. more from her tomorrow. as she has called a press conference for ten in the morning in oakland, terry mcsweeney. nbc bay area news. new at 11 tonight, an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting in the east bay. alameda county da has charged howard reed with two counts of murder. police say

reed shot and killed dorthy mack and melanie zhang at their home. that the three shared in san lorenzo earlier this month. now, reed was arrested in kansas and he's going to be extradited back to california while on the loose and potentially dangerous tonight, a plea for help from sapd as they search for a sexual assault suspect. san jose investigators say that this man, who is homeless, identified as julian salvador martinez, attacked a minor as she was walking home. this happened under the 280 overpass south 11th street back in april. police say martinez is usually seen around the neighborhood of east williams and south 10th or around creek area off keys and center road. if you see him, you are being asked to call 911. history. in san francisco, city supervisors officially becoming the first in the nation to ban firefighter uniforms that may cause cancer. the final vote was this afternoon. the issue is now the issue is with the jacket and pants that they wear. our investigative unit found that they contain chemicals known as pfas. those chemicals are

supposed to help the clothing repel flammable liquids and resist extreme heat. but research has shown that absorbing those compounds through your skin can be dangerous. the next step in this ban is for the mayor to sign off on it, which he's expected to do. the city would then have two years to phase out the old uniforms and purchase new ones that don't contain those pfas. while san francisco's five top candidates for mayor will debate the city's issues on monday, but they're going to do it on two separate stages, mayor breed today pulled out of the debate planned by the political advocacy group together sf action. she cited concerns that the deep pocketed group is too closely connected to her opponent, mark farrell. now, breed claims his campaign has, quote, unduly influenced the debate and described it as a, quote tainted beyond repair. the occasion mayor breed instead will be holding a separate, moderated conversation on the same day, and time with another mayoral opponent, longtime supervisor aaron peskin. now,

the original debate will still include three of breed's reelection challengers farrell, who we just told you about, daniel lurie, which both are polling close to, behind breed supervisor asha sapphire will also debate those men. san jose is one step closer to naming a new police chief. community feedback meetings have ended. the city is now accepting applications for the position, and community leaders will then interview the candidates. in late june, the city council will make a final decision in the fall. several city stakeholders have different opinions, of course, on what the chief's top priorities should be, from crime fighting and community policing to staffing and homelessness. san jose is also facing competition from other big cities. la and houston are also on the hunt for a chief. so as a city, we're going to have to be really competitive. we're going to have to also incentivize and in order to attract a top notch police chief, there's a good chance it could be an internal hire. san jose hasn't appointed

an outside police chief since 1976. dozens of red lobster locations across the country are on the chopping block, and that includes two in the bay area. at least 99 restaurants will close, including the seafood eateries in rohnert park and this one in fremont. red lobster has been struggling with debt, executive turnover and strategies, including an all you can eat shrimp promotion last fall that resulted in huge financial losses. now, the company is auctioning off equipment from the locations that are closing several items up for grabs, from high performance ovens to upright refrigerators. even some dining room furniture. okay, this might hurt if you live in the south bay, your water bill may be going up valley water approved a rate hike in a 6 to 1 vote this afternoon. that means most people in santa clara county will pay nearly $9 more each month. in the south county, it's a smaller increase between 1 to $3 a month. valley water says the extra money is needed to fund critical infrastructure projects like the seismic

retrofit of the anderson dam in morgan hill, okay, check it out. chase center lit up in lavender tonight. our new wnba team has announced its name. are you ready? the golden state valkyries, the woods valkyrie, the valkyries. there's a history behind this name. we know this. the logo and colors are one of a kind. here's nbc's ian cull. our story has yet to be written. today, the legacy of the golden state valkyries begins. the wnba s newest team's name was celebrated around the bay and splashed across chase center today, where the valkyries will play their home games. the team shop, packed with new merchandise and instant fans. oh, it's so exciting. it reminds me of when the wnba came out in like 97. i think i was in seventh grade and there was so much excitement, the intentionality behind the logo. when i saw it this morning, i was like, well, gotta head down to the team store and buy all the merch. google searches for valkyries spiked after the

announcement, according to the team, the term comes from norse mythology saying, quote, valkyries are a host of warrior women who are fearless and unwavering, flying through the air and sea alike, the team added. the brand is golden state's modern interpretation of valkyries strong, bold and fierce. when i hear the golden state valkyries, i think of power, i think of community, i think of achieving the impossible together and showing the world what is possible. i found it to be really powerful and i'm like, yeah, i can rock with that. there are multiple symbols in the logo, starting with the v for valkyries, the bay bridge is depicted to show the team's span across the bay because they will practice in oakland and play in san francisco. the bridge tower doubles as a sword, weapons the mythological valkyries would carry, and the 13 lines coming from the top of the sword represent the franchise, becoming the 13th active team in the wnba, all adorned in the team's signature color. valkyrie violet. the color is incredibly

and say rideshare drivers are seeing their dogs and canceling their rides. but they're not just any dogs, they're service dogs. as you might know, those dogs are critical to their safety. they say what uber and lyft drivers are doing is humiliating and illegal. let's bring in our investigative reporter, candice nguyen. candice uber and lyft insist

their policies prohibit this kind of discrimination, but we spoke to riders who say those policies aren't effective and they're getting stranded. annalisa de leonardo navigates the world a little differently. we love thrifting, going to used bookstores through the eyes of cousteau, he means the world. a trained guide dog, the san jose special ed teacher says the four year old labrador retriever gets them from one place to another safely. i am considered legally blind. he is literally my eyes. he is without him. several times i would have been a pancake. because of that condition. de leonardo can't see overhead obstacles or curbs on the ground. i also cannot see if cars are about to hit me to get to and from work. this teacher takes a rideshare every day with cousteau that is, if they can find a driver who will accept

him. it's anxiety provoking because it's not always a great experience. when they deny me. de leonardo's rideshare apps show denial after denial. i don't think a dog, he's a service dog. thank you. when confronting the drivers, excuse after excuse, it says, why aren't you taking me? i don't want to mess up my car. it's a service, though. it's a lyft. you have to. it happens so often . de leonardo now records the interactions. a dog is not allowed in my car. it's a service dog. no i understand, but, you know, i already mentioned in my car refusing to accommodate service dogs is a violation of the americans with disabilities act, which prohibits discrimination based on disability. according to both lyft and uber, allergies, religious objections and a fear of dogs are not valid reasons for their drivers to refuse. a rider with a service animal on a

human level, what does it feel like? like i'm less than i'm not wanted in society. de leonardo is not alone. linda mcleod from willow glen has been denied as well. as i was reaching for the handle for the door, he got out and said, oh no, no, no, no pets , no dogs. he mentioned that, uber has this this program called uber pet. in 2021, uber introduced uber pet, an option that allows riders to bring along furry friends for an extra $5. but mcleod says the program has made the problem worse for blind people, service animals, she says, are not pets. drivers think it's an option. he's the same as a wheelchair, mcleod says. it's illegal to make blind people pay more money to ride with their service animals, so that means it's not being provided to me at the same level as the service for other people

who don't have a disability. the investigative unit reached out to uber and lyft with these concerns. uber said discrimination on our platform is unacceptable, and it takes appropriate action, which can include deactivation of a driver's account. lyft told us it requires all drivers to accommodate passengers traveling with service animals and it asked riders to report issues immediately and then i usually get a $5 gift card. and so sometimes i've just stopped reporting. seven years ago, both lyft and uber settled lawsuits brought by the national federation of the blind. as a result, uber said it reminds drivers of their contractual and legal obligations to transport riders with service animals. but de leonardo says these actions are still clearly not enough against lyft's policy to refuse him. lyft. you can't say no because he's a helper dog. no. okay, i'm going to report to you , okay? i think they're not

disappearing into the clouds 53 degrees and not much change in temperatures from 24 hours ago. and it's cool out towards walnut creek. we still have that onshore breeze moving through contra costa county, and eventually some low clouds into solano county as well. and right now in san jose, mostly clear, but by the morning we will see the low clouds fill in once again. some spotty areas of drizzle ongoing near the coast. it's the inland valleys north bay, east bay, santa clara valley that will have the chance of 80s for the next couple of afternoons. and for the weekend, things will be dry, but more wind and a little more cooling as we head towards sunday. so tomorrow morning, notice how the low clouds spill inland. what we're seeing right now in san francisco eventually heads out through the carquinez strait and banks up there along the altamont pass for the morning. but then, just like we had today, sunshine, inland temperatures climbing into the 70s and 80s. but on the coast, a different story as this is may, but this kind of looks like our summer microclimates as you're about to see with their afternoon temperatures. we begin with temperatures in the mid 50s

clouds and then giving way to sunshine inland around lunchtime, mid 70s around livermore and san jose. now we're starting to see a few more 80s popping up around livermore and san jose. 90s for ukiah and clear lake. this trend will continue into thursday, then by the weekend we begin to see some cooling daytime highs dropping a little bit on saturday, and odds are by sunday, that's when things are really going to start to cool down. no rain, except you can head out to the sierra. you might see some isolated thunderstorms there. it's that system dropping in by sunday afternoon, which should bring more wind and a little more cooling for the second half of the weekend. so morning fog and coastal clouds continue in the san francisco forecast. most places at their warmest tomorrow and thursday, and overall pretty pleasant. just trending a little bit cooler for those weekend plans coming up next weekend. it's like country club weather just nice and mild. it is not too hot, not too cold. thanks, rob. okay, up next from quarterback to pitcher brock purdy threw out the first pitch of tonight's giants game. did it

to prevent more vandalism at the facility in fremont. right there at the tesla factory. this comes after someone damaged several parked cars in tesla's parking lot overnight. police were called to the facility at around 2:30 a.m. and found several parked cars with slashed tires. sticker shock that is also a daunting milestone. the median cost of a home in santa clara county has now reached the $2 million mark. that's according to the santa clara county association of realtors. realtors we spoke to say they're seeing more buyers who are looking to make a springtime move, but not enough sellers to accommodate them. so the result is multiple offers for almost every property, which of course is driving up prices. i think
