forecast. >> so it begin. it's a little chilly out there this morning. some fog as well. we have a bit of drizzle along the coast too. here's a live look outside from the exploratorium camera right now showing you we have that morning gray overcast. this is one of those days where across the city that fog is going to be very persistent. so we'll see. limited sunshine in the city and along the coast, but away from the coast we will have bright conditions, temperatures. right now we're basically all starting out in the 50s this morning. so let's break it down by our regions first along the coast, very similar to yesterday. we get a little bit of sunshine later on this afternoon, but clouds really ruling the forecast near the coast. temperatures stuck in the 50s all day now around the bay shoreline. it's a little bit of a different story. you can see we're starting with cloud cover ending with cloud cover. but temperatures are in the 60s. then as you head inland, we will find those temperatures a little bit cooler than yesterday. we'll see those numbers mainly in the upper 70s. so not as warm as yesterday, but equally as bright later on this afternoon. let's

check in with amanda and see how we're doing with the commute this morning. yeah. >> good morning. here at 501 we want to leave you with your drive. times tracy to dublin, 44 minutes, san rafael to san francisco. that will take you about 18 minutes. and then antioch to concord on westbound for that will take you 14 minutes back to you at the desk. >> thanks, amanda. protesters are not backing down. they are now occupying a vacant building near uc berkeley's campus. thi is located on haight street. it's aoss the street from people's park. the building has been sitting empty since a fire two years ago. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is here with the details. gloria. protesters set up camp there after their large encampment in sproul plaza got taken down. >> that's right. reggie and our photographer actually just checked in. they are still out there right now. a group of pro-palestine activists took over an abandoned building owned by uc berkeley. this a day after a compromise was reached to disband the encampment on campus. graffiti now covers parts of the alumni hall building. it's across the street from people's park. uc berkeley police say some of the group hopped fences and broke windows

to get inside. it was initially thought it was a people's park protest because it was the 55th anniversary of the founding of the park, but it merged into a pro-palestinian protest. recent demonstrators have been protesting the public university system's financial involvement in military and pro-israeli causes. abc seven talked to people on both sides of this issue. >> i didn't take over the building, but we are resisting with palestinian who are the bravest, strongest and most tenacious resisters i ever heard of. >> they seem to parrot the narratives that are given to them and only want to focus in searly on on gaza when their own backyard has problems. i mean, they took our park, we have homelessness all throughout california. we have, i mean, the issues of our modern world are endless that are local, but none of these people are local, and none of these people seem to

care about the local issues. all they care about is gaza and overseas and the university officially says it is a crime scene, different than civil disobedience or nonviolent political protests. >> it's still unclear if arrests will be made and if the building will be cleared of. protesters live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news thank you, gloria. >> we are waiting to see if protesters interrupt the uc board of regents meeting for a second day in a row yesterday. the meeting had to be paused after protesters began yelling at board members over the listen to our voices. >> so the second warning. you're welcome to observe the meeting should you continue to disrupt, we will have to recess and have the police clear the auditorium, this is the final warning. and if and we will clear the room until you divest. >> this is not a threat. >> the yelling happened at several points of that meeting, which is being held at uc merced after that final warning, the

regents asked the california highway patrol officers to step in and lead the protesters out. the regents have said they have no plans to divest from military or israeli supporting assets. >> the union that represents uc grad students and academic workers voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike over the ucs response to protests. this vote doesn't guarantee a strike will happen, but the union is demanding the uc system divest, and they're upset with how they feel. uc officials interfered with its members right to protest. this means union leadership can call for a work stoppage at any point. classes and research could face major disruptions, as many of these institutions wrap up the school year. >> police cleared an encampment on uc irvine's campus, arresting several pro-palestinian protesters after they barricaded and occupied a university building. there were some small clashes as officers moved in and corralled those demonstrators. you can see some of that chaos here. police say some of the

protesters had chained the doors to a lecture hall shut and stay with us for our continuing coverage of the college campus protests here in the bay area and nationwide. and you can get the latest anytime at abc seven news.com. >> a group of san franciscans is taking their demands for change to the streets. the city's annual ride of silence is a solemn memorial meant to honor those injured or killed while biking. the event is held on may 15th globally in more than 20 countries. abc seven news reporter sarah campbell was there for the city's 22nd ride of silence and shares a powerful stories behind the ride, a gathering of cyclists in san francisco's mission district. >> here, with a mission of their own, to remember those killed while biking and to raise awareness. >> nine years ago, my partner charles here died three blocks from here, and jeff jones has been participating in the ride of silence ever since. he was a very good cyclist. he knew what he was doing and, you know, if

nothing else, you know, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> the annual ride takes cyclists from the mission district to city hall, where they will place what's dubbed a ghost bike. >> we do the ride year after year after year, after year to honor the people that we lost and never do forget that paul valdez is the event organizer and says this year they're adding two names to the list, including professional cyclist ethan boyce, who was hit and killed while riding in the presidio last year, and laura taylor, who was killed in a hit and run. >> we don't like to, add a name or create a new ghost bike because someone, you know, lost their lives simply because they're riding a bike. >> the bicycle community in san francisco is really tight, and it's very strong. and seeing people come together for a common cause is always lovely. >> and she says it was a close call herself that brings her out to ride this ride is important to me because i almost died riding my bicycle. >> people who drive to slow down, please, you know, and try

to share the roads. >> and they're asking for the city's help as well. >> the city should do a much better job of building infrastructure that permits people to get on their bike and not risk their lives every single day. >> and as for jeff jones, he says he'll keep coming back in remembrance of charlie. >> i'll be here again next year for the same reason, and hopefully we won't have we won't be adding any more names. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> new this morning governor gavin newsom at the vatican meeting with the pope overnight. amanda is the governor. is there to speak about climate change. yeah. >> kumasi governor newsom is one of several speakers at the three day climate summit at the vatican gardens. his talk is called the gold standard climate leadership in the golden state. the governor discussed how the changing climate is affecting california's landscapes and natural disasters, and how the state can lead on the world stage. also joining governor newsom are the governors of new york and massachusetts. all

three are democrats. the summit, hosted by the pontifical academy of sciences and social sciences, brought in experts from around the world who are recognized by the catholic church. newsom, using the platform to go after oil companies, the polluted heart of the climate crisis are these fossil fuel companies that have been lying to us. >> they have been deceiving us. they've known the science. they've denied the science. they've delayed advancement. >> one of the meeting's objectives is to produce a draft protocol on climate resilience that will be submitted to the united nations. and earlier this morning, the group of governors did have a brief meeting with the pope. details of that meeting have not been released yet. back to you at the desk? no, let's send it to drew. hey, thanks. >> amanda, 509 will go to oakland this morning with a live look from our cameras. we do have pretty cloudy conditions. once again, our marine layer is pretty deep this morning, meaning it's going to take its

time burning off in a lot of cities. and we are seeing some coastal drizzle as well. currently in oakland we're at 56 degrees with those cloudy conditions. a light wind but high humidity at this hour. so let's look at future weather. let's go hour by hour. you can clearly see by 9:00 am we are still dealing with a lot of fog, specifically through the delta and the counties adjacent to it. a similar story along the coast as well. that fog will break down close to noon in the east bay, but along the coast we stay cloudy all day long. we're watching the city. i think it's one of those days where we're stuck in the cloud cover for much of the day, probably between 1 and 3. we get a little bit of sunshine, but do expect a pretty chilly day in the city. and then that fog surges back inland once again. and in fact, tonight is going to be even cloudier than we are right now. so looking at the day planner today, we start out with that morning cloud cover. some drizzle. that fog will start to thin out. it is a cooler afternoon today by about 1 or 2 degrees in most spots, but we still have a wide range of

and who was in police custody back in 2020. well, this morning we are hearing from his family, angelo quinto's relatives spoke outside of their home yesterday afternoon. quinto died after he was forcibly restrained by antioch police while having a mental health crisis. in the years since his death, the quinto quinto family has worked with the city to create a new community response team named after him. they say they are thankful for the city's efforts to prevent similar situations from happening. >> we have been so fortunate in that instead of an adversarial process, we've largely found a city and there are many things that we still need to work on, but we found a city that has listened to a lot of our pleas and has begun to make the necessary changes. >> members of the community response team are trained to de-escalate mental health situations. during the first year, the program responded to 500 calls a month. antioch's mayor called for it to recently call for it to be expanded. >> crews reached a settlement with a woman who was severely

injured by one of the company's robo taxis. the exact terms of the agreement have not been revealed. the woman was hit by a regular vehicle in october, but that impact threw her into the path of a driverless car at fifth and market in san francisco. she was then pinned under that car as it attempted to pull over. crews said the incident was caused by a software malfunction. the incident led the dmv to suspend cruise's driverless taxi license in san francisco, and crews no longer has vehicles anywhere currently driving. >> heads up as you go outside this morning, expect to see a lot more bikes on the road. amanda. it is bike to wherever day and kumasi. >> it used to be bike to work day, but so many of you work from home now. the name was changed with the hope of just getting everyone out of the house. now as you mentioned, it's bike to wherever day and there are tons of events across the bay area in the south bay to kicks things off at 630 with their energizer station on the guadalupe river trail behind their headquarters on north

first street, you can grab coffee and snacks. then in san francisco, the fun starts at 730. the san francisco bicycle coalition is organizing a meeting points at a bunch of places around the city, including golden gate park, the fillmore, and the embarcadero. people will then ride to city hall for a big rally. mayor london breed will be a speaker for the event, and keep an eye out if you're taking bart or caltrain today, both agencies will have energizer stations set up at a number of stations, and we've just highlighted a few of the biggest things. there's a ton of stuff happening in neighborhoods across the bay area, and you can probably find something close to your home. back to you at the desk. reggie >> amanda. thank you. a huge relief if you have plans to visit big sur. just about 24 hours from now. highway one will reopen eight days ahead of schedule, so here's what you need to know. if you're going that way starting tomorrow. we need to be patient and be cautious as we're traveling through. >> keep an eye, high visual horizon. seeing the other vehicles, bicyclists

>> starting tomorrow morning around 630, what was the northbound lane will reopen for cars alternating in both directions. it will be controlled by a traffic light. so you should expect delays as a way for cars to get through. and the light to turn green. you might remember a portion of the southbound lanes crumbled back in march. governor newsom says work to repair and reopen the southbound lane will be done next spring. now to an abc seven news building. a better bay area breakthrough general motors is getting on. is betting on the bay area to fuel its innovation. as the auto industry becomes more high tech, it opened up a tech hub right in the heart of silicon valley, located on terra bella avenue in mountain view, and it will house about 200 employees. >> they range from software engineers to research and development. we have a new option to get to the airport or to events. uber has launched a new shuttle that will cost you less than a regular ride, and you can book up to five seats. these shuttles will not be

and casino in vegas, is closing for good this summer. >> property owners are clearing the way for the construction of hard rock las vegas. mirage is. last day is july 17th in the south bay. >> the san jose fire department seems to have discovered a breakthrough to try and create a more inclusive workforce. it's their way of helping to build a better bay area by aiming to increase the number of women, trans and non-binary firefighters within their ranks. so the department is holding its fifth annual women's plus bootcamp this is open to gender non-conforming and trans community members interests. search for this event. after a total of 75 spots filled within five hours of registration, the bootcamp includes a 90 minute circuit training workout, followed by a q&a. >> you want women in your organization. you have to make them feel welcome. have a welcoming environment before they get there. that's how you can keep them safe. >> phd currently has 24 women firefighters out of 648, according to an independent research firm. that's below the

overhead right now. it's really light wind. the flag's not moving too much atop the piers this morning out pretty uniform. pretty much every city is beginning in the mid and upper 50s this morning, with a fair amount of cloud cover reported in most locations. so we'll take you to the coastline first this morning. it's just a cloudy day, a little bit of sunshine around 3 p.m. it is also pretty windy along our coast today. we'll find those winds likely 30mph later today, and temperatures in the 50s all day long around the bay shoreline. we start and we finish the day with that marine layer. in between we have sunshine but cooler today in the 60s. and again, those winds do pick up gusting about 20 to 30mph inland. we have partly cloudy skies right now, quickly turning to sunshine. this morning. and then this afternoon. most areas staying in the 70 about 2 to 4 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. let's check in with amanda and see how the commute is going this morning. >> yeah good morning drew a clear early morning commute so far minus that typical slowdown

through the altamont pass for those of course heading westbound, the speeds are down to 12mph because the slowdown begins at 205. let's get back to your headlines. >> thank you. amanda new this morning. what will be a major key in helping to get humanitarian aid into gaza is almost ready. according to u.s. central command, a floating pier built by the u.s. military has been moved from the port where it was built, to a beach in gaza, about 30 miles away. trucks are expected to start moving that aid ashore in the coming days. the united nations and world food program will distribute it. >> the effort to get new humanitarian aid into gaza is happening, as we are seeing more protests over the war between israel and hamas here at home at uc berkeley this morning, protesters are now occupying a vacant building near campus. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is here with the details and the new video of these protesters, who apparently spent the night there. >> they did, reggie, and they're still out there right now. this comes a day after a compromise was reached to disband the encampment on campus. and our photographer, stefan stifter,

the school's president is on administrative leave. following an email he sent out to the campus community. the chancellor of csu says mike lee sent a campus wide message concerning an agreement with protesters without first getting the, quote, appropriate approvals. in the memo, lee said the school would disclose university vendor contracts and seek divestment strategies. the campus encampment has now been taken down, school officials tell abc seven news that organizers agreed to move out last night. we're hearing from the ceo of the jewish community relations council, bay area. the group agrees with that decision to put sonoma state's president on leave, and they say they have greater concerns about the calls to divest. >> we don't think that it's fair , right, to single out a country we can disagree with the government of the country just like ours, but to boycott it, to delegitimize its people, to stop doing academic exchanges with it, we think is deeply problematic and alienates the
